How QR codes work

QR codes store data in a 2D pattern that cameras can read. When you scan a QR code with your phone camera, the device decodes the pattern and performs the appropriate action—opening a link, connecting to WiFi, saving a contact, or displaying text. No special app is required; iOS and Android support QR scanning natively.

Our generator creates standard QR codes that work with any QR reader. Static QR codes never expire and work forever—the data is embedded directly in the image.

What is an SMS QR code?

An SMS QR code uses the sms: URI scheme. When scanned, it opens the device's default messaging app with the recipient number and optionally a pre-filled message.

Useful for support lines, campaigns, or any scenario where you want to encourage a specific text response.

How to create a sms QR code

  1. Enter the phone number (with country code for international)
  2. Optionally add a pre-filled message
  3. Customize the QR code
  4. Download and share

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to include country code?
For international recipients, yes. Include the country code (e.g., +1 for US) so the message works correctly across regions.
Will it work on iMessage or WhatsApp?
It opens the default SMS/messaging app. On iOS that may be iMessage; on Android it depends on the user's default app. It does not directly open WhatsApp.
